L'Arche Toronto

Become an Assistant

Through friendship, meaningful work, fun social activities, and home life, assistants and core members build communities of belonging together.

The key to life in L’Arche is being open to relationship. Assistants (direct support workers) support core members (people with intellectual disabilities) in their daily lives and in achieving their goals for a good life. In their home or program, assistants and core members share the joys and challenges of daily life, working together to strengthen belonging within L’Arche and in the wider community.

House assistants (live-in or live-out) and core members create home and share their lives in households of eight to ten people. Days are filled with the ordinary tasks of daily living: personal care, cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, accompanying people to medical appointments, attending regular community meetings and events. Home life is the cornerstone of L’Arche. The evening meal, birthdays, and other cherished celebrations strengthen the bonds between people who live and work together.

Assistants come with a broad range of backgrounds and qualifications. We are looking for an educational background in Developmental Services (DSW), Social Services (SSW), or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and/or 2+ years of experience in the Developmental Services Sector.

All new assistants participate in a program of orientation and training. Compensation and benefits are based on the role and length of employment.
