IN OUR WORLD FRIENDSHIP MATTERS

Work With Us

At L’Arche, people with and without intellectual disabilities live, work, and learn together creating communities of friendship and belonging

Being An Assistant Is About Sharing Life

L’Arche has a distinct spirit where persons with intellectual disabilities and those who provide personal care truly share life with one another while living together in a L’Arche home.

We cook and eat dinner together, get together with friends, participate in activities in our neighbourhoods, go on vacation together, and celebrate often. In living this simple yet profound experience, Assistants gain valuable life skills, opportunities for personal growth and self direction, as well as enhanced leadership abilities.

Direct Support Worker/Assistant

The key to life in L’Arche is being open to relationship. Assistants (Direct Support Workers) and core members (people with intellectual disabilities) create home and share their lives together in households of eight to ten people.

Days are filled with the ordinary tasks of daily living: personal care, cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, accompanying people to medical appointments, attending regular community meetings and events. Home life is the cornerstone of L’Arche. The evening meal, birthdays, and times of prayer are small but cherished celebrations that strengthen the bonds between people who live and work together.

Assistants (Direct Support Workers) come with a broad range of backgrounds and qualifications. We are in particular looking for an educational background in Developmental Services (DSW), Social Services (SSW), or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and/or 2+ years of experience in the Developmental Services Sector. All new assistants participate in a program of orientation and training. Compensation, benefits, days away and vacation time are provided.

Beyond Welcoming

Assistants come to L’Arche from around the world and from their local areas. Together with the people with intellectual disabilities, they create homes of welcome and celebration. The key to life in L’Arche is a commitment to helping one another build positive, supportive relationships.
