When he first came to live at L’Arche Toronto’s Simpson House two years ago, Lucas Puscas usually wanted to be in the basement rec room, playing games on his iPad or watching Netflix like many 22-year-olds. This was okay with us because we knew that his whole life had turned upside down. Everything was unfamiliar, and he was overwhelmed. He was asking for time to process a new home, a new neighborhood, and a new city. Lucas’s housemates approached him with kindness and gentleness. The team set up his bedroom with care, putting up his photos and mementos. We gave Lucas space to meet new people and get used to his new life.

Slowly, his housemates learned what made Lucas laugh, what he liked, and what was hard for him. Lucas began to relax and ease into the home. Simpson hosted his first birthday at L’Arche with his foster family. He was over-the-moon, seeing his family! It was a joyful celebration, connecting his past to his present. Lucas began creating beautiful, grounding relationships with the team, guided by gentleness, curiosity, and playfulness. These connections helped him get outside the house with greater ease. He began to explore new places with his housemates, participate in day programs, and attend L’Arche Toronto community events.
Lucas and Sarah have a special relationship. She writes, “From the time I’ve known Lucas, one thing that has always stood out to me is his gentle spirit and the way he naturally creates connection with the people around him. Seeing him learn new words, become more aware of his boundaries and comfort, and grow more expressive and confident over time has been very special. I feel lucky to continue getting to know him and to be part of the team supporting and celebrating him.”

Today, we see big changes in Lucas. His smile is joyful, his shoulders are relaxed, and he is opening himself outward with curiosity. He wants to meet the new people at the Simpson House dinner table. The team helped Lucas feel safe and welcome in his new home. Through this experience, the spark that was always inside him has lit a flame that is shining brightly.
